Resources, News, and Announcements

From the Mayor’s desk – 4/11/25

Happy Friday!

The weather is warming up and the sun is making more than just an appearance in Surfside now.  Hope you can get outside and enjoy it!

Human Resources:

EMS Director.  The interview team has unanimously selected a candidate for this position.  Next steps are the background check and then the candidate must be properly vetted and approved through City Council at a special executive session to be scheduled next week.  During this closed session to discuss personnel issues, the Council will hear from the interview team and have time to speak with the candidate prior to adjourning to make a public vote on approval of this new hire.

Finance Director.  The candidate pool has been formalized and these interviews will be scheduled for next week.  The selected candidate from this process will also be properly vetted through a background check and City Council.

Beach & Parks:

An update on some immediate road repairs in the works based off input from citizens and Council at last Tuesday's City Council meeting.  The road crew will be repairing the 2 large holes on Bluewater Hwy near the Seagull entrance, and in addition will bid out a contracted job to replace the entrance from Bluewater Hwy to Coral Court with cement.  The plan is to complete both of these repairs in the month of April.  Again, please inform City Hall and specifically Toby about any priority road repairs that you feel are needed.

Public Works:

We paid a fine of $6100 to TCEQ this week as a result of violations of the Water Quality Act from 2023-2024, specifically for a 4 quarter running annual average concentrations for arsenic above limits and a 4 quarter running annual average concentrations of total trihalomethanes ("TTHM") above limits.  The arsenic has been restored within limits on Dec 2nd and we are in full compliance since that time.  The TTHM has been within limits the last 3 quarters, but requires another sample this quarter (April-June) with measurement within limits to be in full compliance.  A note on arsenic as most are familiar with that naturally occurring element.  Our 4 quarter running average in violation was 0.0155 milligrams per liter (mg/L) versus an acceptable limit of 0.010 mg/L.  Although that is above the acceptable concentrations per TCEQ requirements, it is important to understand that limits are set intentionally low in order to detect and correct at very small quantities and concentrations before they become harmful.  This is exactly what has occurred in this case.  If you have any questions on TCEQ or our quarterly inspections, please contact Erick in PW.

Building:

Stahlman walkover is under construction to finish the ramps on both ends.  The beach side portion of the new ADA ramp is nearing completion for the weekend activities.

Other Items of Interest:

This weekend is the Surfside Volunteer Fire Department’s annual crawfish cookoff fundraiser.  Kicking off at 11AM, with a $25 (or more!!) donation you can enjoy all you can eat crawfish, listen to 2 live bands, and chat up most of your fellow residents of Surfside Beach.  I hope that you are able to make it out for this great event to benefit our SSVFD.

As always, I hope that you have a great day and enjoy the weekend in wonderful Surfside Beach!

Thanks,

Zach
